DesignEdit
Yuma has dark skin, red eyes, and black and red spiked hair that points out and upward. In every outfit he wears, Yuma is always wearing The Emperor's Key around his neck. He also owns a white and yellow Duel Gazer with a green lens, matching the color scheme of his ace, "Number 39: Utopia". Yuma bares a striking resemblance to his father, Kazuma Tsukumo, but has inherited his mother's red eyes. When in his school attire, he wears a white shirt with red-lined sleeves and collar, a red tie and blue pants.
PersonalityEdit
Yuma is a hasty, straightforward, honest and cheerful young boy who likes to challenge himself to do anything that seems impossible, which he normally fails at. He states that doing these challenges gets him fired up and will eventually accomplish what he sets out to do. He calls this challenge his "Kattobingu" spirit ("feeling the flow" in the English version), which his father taught him. He is also somewhat self-contradictory as he often says one thing and does the exact opposite, as when Tori Meadows tells him that she doesn't understand what it's like to be him after being left exhausted only to change the subject to how he always gets fired up, or when he says he won't show up to his Duel with Ryoga Kamishiro until immediately regaining his confidence.Yuma loves his parents and treasures the artifact they gave him greatly, shown when he was depressed when Shark broke it and nearly had a panic attack when he lost it, but really just ran out the house without it. Astral says that deep in Yuma's heart that he struggles with the sadness of losing his parents and tries to live up to their teachings. It said that Yuma's picked his personality from his father's spirit and his mother's affection.
Yuma is shown to stick up for others despite their protests, challenging Shark to reclaim Bronk's Deck. Yuma believes Duelists can't be bad people and believes a Duel to be a clash of souls. He also appears to be naive as he believed that Flip really had good intentions even after his friends had warned him he was a swindler from the start.
Yuma seems to have a positive effect on the people he Duels, Mr. Kay claimed that Yuma has a "sun-like" power and that people who have contact with Yuma has their hearts "illuminated" without noticing. After his Duel with Shark, he stopped stealing others decks and the two eventually became friends. After defeating Flip, he gave up his conniving ways and became an honest person. After defeating Nelson Andrews, he helped him repair his relationship with his mother and become his own person instead of living in the shadow if his ESPer Sparrow persona. After defeating Cathy, she began to gain more confidence and started hanging out more with Yuma and his friends instead of always hiding from others. After defeating Yamikawa, he was able to let go of his anger after being stopped by Yuma from slashing a statue and started studying again under his former teacher.
He is easily annoyed, and frequently clashes with Astral due to his short-temper and stubborness. Yuma tends to disobey Astral's instructions when they Duel, which leads to him making mistakes. He only starts obeying when he is about to lose, as he believes the Duels are his and listening to him would mean he needed help to win. As the series progresses, Yuma and Astral start working together, as shown in Episode 18 when he called Astral his friend. Presently, Yuma doesn't complain much when Astral gives him advice and normally just says "I understand", but he still gets upset sometimes.
As the series goes on, Yuma's Dueling skills are slowly increasing. Now he can Duel opponents like Cathy and Obomi without Astral telling him what to do (though this only happens when he Duels seriously, seeing how he is still defeated with ease in friendly Duels), but he still relies on him to help him out at difficult times.
BiographyEdit
Childhood Edit
Grew up with his loving parents, Kazuma Tsukumo and Mirai Tsukumo and his childhood friend, Tori Meadows. His older sister, Kari Tsukumo forbids him to Duel.[4] He regularly lost to his friend Bronk Stone.Present day Edit
Yuma is plagued by nightmares of a demonic gate .[5] When Bronk loses his Deck to Shark in an Ante Duel, Yuma challenged him. Shark breaks The Emperor's Key in response, which was an artifact he inherited from his parents. Bronk recovers the missing piece. During the Duel, he uses a Deck constructed by his father, as opposed to his usual Deck. Yuma makes several amateur mistakes and sees the demonic door again. He is given to the opportunity to open it, and does so with The Emperor's Key. After he opens it, a dark force envelops Shark as he Xyz Summons "Number 17: Leviathan Dragon". Surprised at his power, and feeling like he wouldn't be able to win, a strange entity tells him to stand up and win.[5]The entity reveals himself to be Astral, a Duelist from another world, shocking Yuma. As Yuma talks with Astral, he notices his friends, and everyone else, cannot see him. Astral tries to take over Yuma's Duel, stating that he has to win at all costs with Yuma always complaining that it was HIS Duel. Astral tries to order Yuma around, intentionally or not, to gain the advantage against Ryoga. However, Yuma refuses to listen to Astral as he is taken down each turn. When Astral informs him that his own life fades as Yuma's Life Points decrease, Yuma takes Astral's advice and uses "Monster Reborn" to Special Summon "Gagaga Magician" from his Graveyard. Astral gifts Yuma with "Number 39: Utopia", an Xyz Monster. Yuma has never owned one before and is excited. He Xyz Summons it by overlaying "Gagaga Magician" with "Ganbara Knight". Astral states that "Utopia" is the power he has entrusted to Yuma and that he must use it to win the Duel. With this card, he made a comeback, and won using it in a combo with "Double or Nothing!". Shark is returned to normal, and returns Bronk's Deck as promised.[1]
With this win, Yuma begins to gain a following around his school, as Shark was known to have pro-level Dueling skills.[6][7] The network at school mysteriously went down one day, and Mr. Kay allowed them to use the day to Duel instead, as they could not access their virtual textbooks with the network down. Yuma Dueled his class's chairman, Caswell. Astral was not present, so Yuma did not have access to his Extra Deck of "Numbers". As a result, he lost without inflicting a single point of damage to Caswell.
Yuma and Tori suspected Caswell of being responsible for the network going down, but he would eventually lead them to the real culprit, Mr. Kay. Mr. Kay had been possessed by one of the "Numbers" and Duels Yuma using "Number 34: Terror-Byte" and the "Crashbug" series.[6] Yuma is able to overcome him only through Summoning both "Utopia" and "Leviathan Dragon". Mr. Kay revealed that he had no ill intentions and simply wanted to bring happiness to the city with a virtual "Crashbug". Astral determined through this that the "Numbers" amplify the emotions that their vessel already had, malicious or not.[8] Flip approaches Yuma to ask for his autograph, and eventually gifts him with a "Baby Tiragon" card in return. Yuma is quite excited to have his own Exceed Monster, despite Tori and Bronk's reservations about Flip. Yuma began what he thought was a friendly Duel against Flip, but it turned out be far from it. "Baby Tiragon" was a trap, and Flip steals "Utopia" via the effect of "Ultra C". Flip then revealed that the autograph Yuma signed was a contract agreeing to ante his Deck in the Duel. Flip goes on to steal "Leviathan Dragon" as well, and appeared possessed by both "Numbers". Astral is sealed in an orb of light as his power weakens, but urges Yuma to protect "Baby Tiragon". Yuma does so and uses its effect to let "Stinging Swordsman" attack directly. With his Continuous Trap Cards returned to his hand, Flip loses the "Numbers" and they return to Yuma. Yuma wins the Duel with them, and attempt to return "Baby Tiragon". Flip tells him to keep it and the two leave the Duel as friends.[9] Whilst Yuma is asleep, Astral is watching a TV show. He becomes interested in the hero: "Different Dimension ESPER Sparrow" as he appears to be from a different dimension also. Yuma is woken up by the sound of the episode and switches it off, only to be bugged by Astral about him believing Sparrow may know something about his memories. Yuma tries to explain it's all fiction, but after failing to convince Astral he reluctantly switches the TV back on, even though the episode has ended.
The next day, Yuma arrives at school to Duel someone, only to be prodded by Tori and Astral to visit Sparrow, who's shooting a scene in town. Flip causes a distraction to get them inside where they see Sparrow practicing alone for his shoot. Astral, still believing TV is real, grows wary of the costumes to the side of the set, and in an attempt to convince Astral they're not real Yuma ends up being flung about in the air by a hook. Whilst Astral ponders over whether Yuma can fly as he can, Yuma drops his Deck in front of Sparrow, who grows concerned. After Yuma drops to the ground, he is saved from being caught by security by Sparrow who, discovering Yuma is a Duelist, takes him to his dressing room. Pleased to meet a Duelist, Sparrow tells Yuma his real name, Nelson Andrews, and gives him back his Deck. After being spooked at the sight of a spider, Nelson admits to Yuma that he is nothing like Sparrow off set. The two become friends, but before they can Duel Nelson's mother forces Yuma out, leaving Nelson to sorrowfully say "Nelson Andrews doesn't matter". Nelson grows upset, and Astral believes the boy may be in pain from loneliness. Astral asks Yuma why Sparrow is also called Nelson, and finally Yuma convinces Astral TV isn't real. After he grows disappointed Nelson can't tell him about his memories, Yuma asks Astral if he's lonely, only for Astral to reply he doesn't know what the word means. Yuma explains, but instead of answering Astral explains he thinks Nelson may be lonely. Meanwhile Nelson is possessed by a "Numbers" card and attacks several people in town, taking his TV persona as his real one. After hearing about it, Yuma and Astral head off to find him. They eventually find Nelson, only to learn he is possessed and under the impression he is Sparrow.
Yuma knows he must Duel him to set Nelson free, but then he reveals his "Numbers" card - "Number 83: Galaxy Queen". Yuma calls Tori and tells her to bring Nelson's mother to the site of the Duel. Yuma proclaimed that he will save Nelson. Just then, Tori shows up with Bronk and Nelson's mother. Nelson's mother tries to talk to him, but he brushes her off. Yuma and Astral debate whether the attack will go through, and they finally decide that they must, if they want to free Nelson. Yuma attacks Galaxy Queen with Utopia, "Hope Sword Slash!", but Sparrow has one last Trap: Star Sparrow is Forever!, reviving ESPER Star Sparrow with zero ATK, but it is still obliterated and so is Sparrow's Life Points. Astral absorbs the Number 83 from Sparrow's (now Nelson's) body. Nelson reunites with his mother, causing Yuma to remember his own mother, and later, Yuma, Tori and Bronk are walking on a bridge talking about the day's events. When Yuma and Tori get into an argument, Shark rides by on a motorcycle and observes them. Later, Yuma and Astral watch the conclusion of the ESPER Sparrow show, and Astral makes Observation No. 10 - "The parent-child relationship is something I understand". One day at school, Bronk says that it's strange that Yuma never once won a Duel against him, but has been winning against many powerful opponents recently. Tori asks what's wrong with that and Bronk responds that bringing it to them is more suited for losing. Bronk speculates that Astral may really exist, as Yuma only began to win after he started talking about him. Yuma enters the room and says hi, seemingly unaware of that fact that's he's wearing leather pants and an over-sized fur coat. Yuma asks why everyone is staring, and Tori tells him she can't take it anymore. She says that she knows it isn't polite to comment on someone's fashion sense, but that she needs to do so in this case. For the last three days, Yuma has shown up to school in strange outfits, being the last one shown a bee costume. Tori tells him that everyone will laugh is he keeps dressing like that. Tori pulls out a standing mirror and tells Yuma to see for himself. He looks horrified, and Bronk asks how he wasn't aware what he was wearing. Tori goes on to tell him that that's not all - strange things have been showing up around him lately. His lunch box was decorated fancily, he suddenly got a 100% on a test and yesterday he was actually able to clear the jump he usually misses in gym class.
Astral appears and tells him he's been watching, it happened again last night - someone came into his room and messed with his things. Yuma asks why Astral never told him and Astral responds that Yuma never asked him. With Astral already there, he doesn't believe that adding more strange things to the room isn't unnatural. Yuma throws off the fur coat and vows to find the person responsible. Tori comments that his being full of spirit doesn't change how terrible his outfit is, and Yuma responds that it's not as if he enjoys dressing this way. She tells him he has absolutely no fashion sense. Yuma asks about her, and she retorts that, at least, her fashion sense is better. Yuma asks her to show him, and she tells him they'll go shopping this Sunday to buy Yuma new clothes, which he agrees and told her to met at 3PM at the shopping mall.
The next day Yuma is waiting for her at the mall, surprised she's late. A group of cats approach Yuma, with the one at the front having a note in its mouth. Astral appears and asks what these things are, saying that the meowing is sending a chill down his spine. Yuma asks if he's scared of cats, and Astral responds that its only because he hasn't yet recorded them in his observations. Yuma jokingly tells him that cats are very sensitive to the supernatural, so they can definitely see Astral, who responds that it seems the cats are looking at Yuma. Noticing the note, he picks it up and sees it's tied with Tori's hair ribbon. He reads it, determining that Tori has been kidnapped. One cat runs away, and Yuma follows it to Cathy's mansion.
He bursts through the front doors screaming Tori's name. The parlor is full of more cats, with one on the stairs. Looking around, Yuma sees statues and paintings of cats. Cathy emerges from upstairs and welcomes him, introducing herself, as Cathy, but telling him to call her "Cat-chan". Astral says he recognizes her, she's always staring at Yuma from afar. Yuma seems to know her, but thinks about it, and says he has no idea who she is. Cathy says that's fine - she's used to it. Yuma asks where Tori is, and why Cathy would do something like this. She responds that it's because Yuma's hopeless. Yuma seems confused and tells her to just give Tori. Cathy turns around and says that she will if Yuma can beat her in a Duel. She then says that "if I win", then she stops and meows instead. Yuma questions if Numbers are involved and Astral says that if that's the case, they have no choice but to win. Yuma tells him that there is no need to tell him that. Cathy tries confessing to Yuma that she loves him but Yuma defeats her with "Baby Tiragon" and Astral attempts to collect her "Numbers" before realizing she did not have one. Yuma walks over to Cathy to help her up, also asking her where Tori is, making Cathy blush.
Tori was at the park the whole time, playing with Cathy's cats. Yuma arrives and asks what she's doing. She laughs nervously. As they walk to school the next morning with Bronk, Tori tells them that she was forced to play with the cats and that Yuma should stop being so angry with her. Yuma angrily insists that he's not angry with her. Cathy walks up to them, blushing and softly says "Good morning." Yuma responds with "hey!" and Cathy walks off happily. Bronk asks who that was, and Tori tells him not to be rude since that girl is in their class. She can't remember her name either though. Yuma tells them her name is Cathy, or Cat-chan, and that she's a strong Duelist. Tori says she didn't know that and Bronk asks if Yuma figured out who was messing with them. Tori says she has to go and walks ahead of them. Astral floats above and documents his eleventh observation - "Yuma still doesn't understand the feelings of women".
One day Yuma is late for school, and dashes across a crosswalk when traffic is cleared, but nearly gets run over by someone on a motorcycle. The driver pulls over and Yuma angrily asks if he didn't see the lights change. He sees that the driver is Shark, who says nothing and pulls away. In class, Caswell then tells Yuma that his victory's over Shark and Flip were due to the Number and questions him about his skills. So Yuma decides to fight Shark again, but Bronk tells him that Shark hasn't been showing up to school lately and how after losing to Yuma, Shark's reputation dropped dramatically. The rumors say he's been hanging out with some "bad people". Later, Yuma wanders the streets, remarking that his friends don't understand - he's much stronger than he was before. When Yuma finds Shark, he refuses to Duel as his previous loss to Yuma caused him to give up Dueling.
Yuma then proceeds to chase Shark and annoy him by requesting a Duel until he accepts. As the Duel progresses, Shark's burn strategy begins to take its toll on Yuma. Shark tells him use his "Numbers" anyway, so Yuma brings out "Utopia". It was not enough, as Shark weakened it with "Killer Frilled Shark", then proceeded to negate its effects and destroy it with his "Black Ray Lancer". With a final direct attack from "Aero Shark", Yuma lost the Duel, losing his pride along the way. Yuma bet his pendant in the Duel as a prize, but when Shark took it, he threw it behind him onto the ground beside Yuma, saying that it wasn't worth destroying as well as warning him not to bother him again. After this, Yuma Duels Bronk without the Numbers only to lose a grand total of 20 times in a row. Eventually Bronk stops Dueling Yuma for lying to him about using the Numbers. On the way to school the next day, Yuma catches up with Bronk, asking him if they can Duel today. Bronk simply says he can't Duel with him anymore . Yuma shakes it off, saying there are plenty of other people to Duel with anyway. Astral appears and tells him that it doesn't matter who he Duels with right now. He says that Yuma would usually at least use basic strategies in his Duels, but he isn't even doing that anymore - he's simply recklessly attacking over and over again. Yuma asks what he means and Astral responds that Yuma is irritated about losing to Shark. Astral says that Shark is indeed a very talented Duelist, but that is not the only reason he won.
Yuma again asks what he means and Astral says that Shark thoroughly studied Yuma's Deck and found the weakness of the "Numbers". But Yuma really knows nothing about Shark. Yuma thinks back to when Bronk speculated that something happened to Shark at Nationals. Yuma and Tori find information in the school library on a computer, The article calls Shark the "tarnished champion candidate". They read that Shark was disqualified for peeking at his opponent's Deck before a Duel began. Tori says it's hard to believe that's why Shark was disqualified. Yuma says it can't be true - the Duel he had with Shark was not with the type of person who would cheat like that. Then someone called Ginji runs up to them and says that 2 brothers in the gang Shark is affiliated with is going to rob a powerful deck in Heartland Museum and are going to place the blame on Shark despite Tori's complaints Yuma heads to the Museum and is in time to stop Shark Rikuo and Kaio from robing the Museum and challenges them to a Duel if they win they can have "Number 39: Utopia".
Shark warned Yuma not to be concerned for him, but Yuma said he wouldn't leave him alone to steal the deck. Yuma also pointed out that Rikuo and Kaio were just using him, that their hideout is not a place for him to stay and that both Yuma and Shark are comrades. Shark then decides to Duel with Yuma against Rikuo and Kaio in a 2-on-2 Tag Duel. Yuma is amazed that he could Xyz Summon "Aero Shark" and inflict damage on his first turn. But Rikuo summons Number 61: Volcasaurus and with it destroys both their monsters and reducing them to 2400 and 1100 life points. Having all their moves countered and with the appearance of "Number 19: Freezerdon", which gave "Volcasaurus" its Overlay Units back, Shark and Yuma were pushed into a corner.
Then Shark revealed what he had suspected Rikuo and Kaio were cheating by ordering their decks so they would know what cards were in each others hands and what they would draw. Also, they had rigged their D-Pad's Shuffle systems. Then Kaio tells Shark that he had cheated back at the National Championship. Shark says it was because he was afraid of losing then they start mocking him for it, but Yuma defends Shark by saying there was nothing wrong with being afraid of losing which is why he used Numbers when he Dueled Shark he was however unaware that Tori and Bronk were near by.
After summoning "Utopia" and having it prevented from attacking by Kaio's trap "Avalanche", Yuma used its effect to protect Shark from attacks which would have caused him to lose. After having "Utopia" and the newly summoned "Black Ray Lancer" destroyed by "Volcasaurus" (avoiding losing by "Damage Diet"), Shark narrowly avoids losing from a direct attack by using the trap "Last Entrust", ending the battle phase and giving Yuma a card needed to win. After eliminating Kaio by forcing him to use his "Compensation Exchange" trap, which saved Volcasaurus by taking damage equal to its ATK, Yuma used "Monster Reborn" to bring back Shark's "Black Ray Lancer" and equip it with Shark's "Armored Xyz" he entrusted to him earlier. It allowed him to give "Lancer" the properties of "Utopia", letting it destroy "Volcasaurus" and attack directly for the win. Bronk and Tori run up congratulating him for winning, and Yuma apologizes for lying. Bronk with some urging from Tori accepts the apology and asks for a Duel with him. Before leaving Shark comments that his card was able to improve Yuma's game, allowing him to keep it before smiling and walking off.

It is said that his memories are scattered in the form of the 100 "Numbers", and so far 10 numbers have been collected. Furthermore, these "Numbers" are Special Xyz Monsters that cannot be killed with cards in this world. When 2 or more "Numbers" confront in a Duel, they will fight each other to consume one another. When their owners are defeated in a Duel, the cards are absorbed into Astral.

PersonalityEdit
His personality is rather ambiguous, he is very intelligent and level-headed when it comes to Duels and even in disastrous situations (often caused by Yuma's mistakes) he does not seem to lose his cool and can think of a strategy. Outside this he is, arguably because of his memory loss and sudden arrival to another world, curious to the point of naivety, for matters as simple as eating, going to the bathroom, or believing that TV shows are real. His naivety would go to such extent so as to ask Yuma why "he needs to be alone" when Yuma's in the bathroom, to which he replies by saying that he would "die" otherwise, a thing that Astral took literally. However, this is more likely because Astral doesn't know anything about Yuma's world. When he "discovers" things, he has an habit of saying "observation number one, two, three" and then speak the result of his analysis, the fact that he can successfully continue the counting throughout the series, implies he has great memory. He has also ambiguous thoughts regarding Yuma; for the most part he thinks of him and his Dueling skills as unrefined and unskilled (a fact that annoys Yuma). However, when Yuma uses an unthinkable but effective strategy, such as in his Duel with Shark, his thoughts change to think of Yuma as an interesting Duelist. Astral even learns to use Yuma's lack of skill and obedience, as seen in Yuma's Duel with Mr. K when he tells Yuma what to do the opposite of what he should do so that Yuma disobeys him and makes the correct moves.Astral has a fear of cats, which he defended by claiming that he hadn't done any observations about them. This is evident when Yuma duels Cathy, even mistakenly believing her to have one of the Numbers in her Deck.
After episode 14, he developed a strong fear towards Kaito, so he always tries to tell Yuma to run from Kaito instead of fighting him, to the point of telling Yuma to forget his friends. He first denied this, but admitted it in episode 17.
Later during the Duel with Jin, Astral overcame his fear and decided to actually fight. After he and Yuma thought about their previous duels, stating they came too far to lose now, Yuma called Astral his friend, restoring his fighting spirit.
Astral doesn't smile much, but for once, he smiled for Yuma recognizing him as his comrade[5] and smiled often at Yuma throughout episode 19 and even cheered him on with his friends and family when he was trying to do his 20-stack challenge.
BiographyEdit
AnimeEdit
A new legend began when Astral appeared before Yuma Tsukumo and Ryoga Kamishiro. He comes from a different dimension and somehow he ended up in Yuma's dimension. He lost his memories but all he remembers is that he was looking for a talented Duelist.[6] In episode 2 it is revealed that only Yuma can see Astral, which makes everyone believe he is a ghost. At the end of Episode 8, it is mentioned of Astral's birth, and that he may have had a mother. And also he was given the mission to protect the world, possibly meaning he was created solely for this task. In episode 10, Astral surmises from within The Emperor's Key that it might have been made intentional by someone to scatter his memories. As Astral absorbs the power of the "Numbers", bits and pieces of his memories start to return, most of them incomplete. Upon absorbing "Number 83: Galaxy Queen", he sees a vision of his birth. Recently, when he absorbed "Number 61: Volcasaurus" and "Number 19: Freezerdon", he had a small glimpse of the fate of his world, which was apparently destroyed by some sort of disaster. Possibly, he is the sole survivor of his planet, and whatever destroyed it may have caused him to lose his memories.
Dr. Faker stated that a messenger from the Astral world would appear together with the Numbers, obviously referring to Astral.[7]
During the Duel with Kaito Tenjo, he found very suspicious that someone besides him and Yuma are looking for the Numbers. He also was surprised that Kaito's Dueling skills were even superior than his, when he was sure Yuma lost and he would die, Kaito cancelled the Duel. He was left shocked at what happened next to Yuma whose pride was severly hurt and even questioned about his Kattobing spirit.[8]
Later during climaxes in the Duel with Jin, Astral overcame his fear and decided to actually fight. After he and Yuma thought about their previous duels, stating they came too far to lose now, Yuma called Astral his friend, and The Emperor's Key started to shine. It resulted in granting him and Yuma a new power, the "Chaos Number", "Chaos Number 39: Utopia Ray" as well as making Astral appear and Yuma's friends able to see him for a moment. Using it, they defeat Jin and take the 2 Numbers cards he was using.
Yuma's friends who were freed in the process, all went to thank Astral instead of Yuma, running right past him, still unable to see him, and thus were shouting at nothing, and Astral didn't pay much attention to it, keeping his cool.
During the next episode, Astral assists Yuma in trying to locate The Emperor's Key after discovering it missing. He learns much about the origin of the Key and Yuma's father, who had a vision of the Astral World being attacked and the sound of people screaming. A strange figure, much like Astral, gave him the key. Astral is much kinder to Yuma, smiling warmly at him and encouraging him to tackle the high jump he attempted at the start of the series.
After safely recovering "Number 96: Black Mist" from a stranger, Bronk and Yuma start to fight. When Bronk knocks off The Emperor's Key from Yuma, a Black Ooze comes out of Yuma's Deck Case which grabs Yuma and starts taking control of Astral. Before Astral gets completely taken over, he tells Yuma to give "Utopia" to Bronk. Afterwards he gets completely possessed and changes from white to pitch-black. Number 96 (In Astral's body) tries to take "Utopia" from Bronk, but The Emperor's Key protected him. Bronk then challenged Number 96 to a duel for the Number. Number 96 accepts and takes control of Yuma's movements to duel. In his first turn, he Xyz Summons Number 96: Black Mist and starts inflicting huge damage to Bronk. Bronk however Summons "Utopia" and tries to make a counterattack, but fails in doing so and "Utopia" is destroyed. Yuma then pretends to be under Number 96's control and tells him to destroy Clockwork Explosive while explaining its effect. Number 96 listens to Yuma and destroys Clockwork Explosive. This however was a trick as it allowed Bronk to summon "Clockwork Shikigami" as well as resurrect "Utopia" to win. Bronk then throws the Emperor's Key back to Yuma and Astral is freed from its control. Astral then absorbs Number 96 again, while Bronk returns "Utopia" to Yuma and they both apologize to each other. [9]
When Kaito manages to steal the Emperor's Key, Astral was trapped inside it. The key activated some security system and the set "Numbers" became cards again, and some voice told Astral to obtain the ZEXAL power. Kaito tries figure out the Eperor's Key and manages to make a portal inside the Emperor's Key using a mysterious rock inside Orbital 7. When Kaito manages to go inside the Emperor's Key, he finds Astral. Kaito and Astral had a small talk and the two Engaged in a duel. Astral is able to make a duel disk of its own as shown in this duel. [10] In this duel, Astral uses Yuma's deck to duel Kaito. Astral tries to go defense as he uses Gogogo monsters but has easily countered by Kaito's Reverse Buster. As Reverse Buster increased its attack making it 2000, Astral is scared as it may be the start of summoning Kaito's Galaxy-Eyes. Astral summoned Gogogo Giant and using its effect, summon Gogogo Golem back. He tries to Xyz Summon but he is aware of Kaito's Facedown card and chooses to use Double Defender. Kaito then used its facedown Photon Hurricane to return its Spell Cards to its hand. Kaito then tributed Reverse Buster to summon Photon Leo and returned Astral's hand back to the deck and draws the same number of cards. Then he equips "Leo" with Photon Spear and inflicted Piercing damage to Astral when Kaito attacked and destroyed "Giant". During the duel, Astral is shrouded with fear towards Kaito.
Astral manages to fight back with Chaos Number 39: Utopia Ray and reduce Kaito's life to 1300, but Kaito takes the upper hand again and reduces Astral's life to 400. Yuma manages to recover the Emperor's Key, which takes him to "The Door" again, the Door opens again and tells Yuma to use the ZEXAL power, but repeats Yuma's previous warning. Yuma convinces Astral to not give up, and crosses the door, landing in the dimension inside the Key. Astral and Yuma receive the ZEXAL power, fusing themselves in the process. Using this new power, Astral and Yuma created a card that allowed "Utopia Ray" to defeat "Galaxy-Eyes". Kaito, in a pinch for the first time, managed to end the duel in a draw and escaped again.

DesignEdit
Tori is a 13 year old girl with green hair and hazel eyes. She wears a schoolgirl outfit with a pink collar and skirt. When out of school, she wears a white t-shirt with yellow decal and a pink skirt. In the dub, she has a longer skirt than in the original. However, the "Characters" page for ZEXAL on the http://www.4kids.tv/show/yu-gi-oh-zexal/characters 4kids website shows Tori's skirt in its original size.Out of all of the current Yu-Gi-Oh! characters, she has worn the most outfits as seen in the ending My Quest when she has had several costume changes. She has also been noted to wear several different outfits when she goes out with Yuma.
PersonalityEdit
Tori is a very cheerful and intelligent girl with the ability to manipulate computers, as demonstrated when Flip framed Yuma and she discovered the whole fiasco. She is protective and fiercely loyal to Yuma, as shown in episode 5 when she believed in him despite the fact that there was "undeniable evidence" against him and how she never laughed at Yuma when he challenged the impossible; she admires his unwavering will and determination of constantly challenging himself.Despite the fact that Tori sometimes gets annoyed by Yuma's naivety and childish outbursts, she appears to harbor a deep crush on Yuma, evidenced by how she blushes and becomes slightly angered when Yuma talks about Cathy (as well as arguing with her over him) or when she smiles at Yuma's antics.Tori is also shown to worry about Yuma's safety when hearing that the "Numbers" cards are dangerous. After Yuma start to give up hope when The Emperor's Key is stolen, Tori is so worried about Yuma that she helps him get back to his senses by slapping him. This sense of worry increases greatly when she screams out Yuma's name in despair, thinking he didn't make it out of Kaito's hideout when it exploded. When he appeared, she cycled through being happy and annoyed, tears in her eyes the whole time. She also blushes when Yuma grabs her hand as the two of them run away from Anna, or when Anna talks about her feelings for Yuma. The latter is accompanied by the sound of a heavy heartbeat when Tori's shocked face is shown. When Hosaku Yasai said he wanted to make Tori the image girl of the tomato amusement park he wanted to create (an idea of which Tori clearly wasn't very fond of) Yuma stepped in and said he would not let that happen showing a hint of jealousy of Hosaku's interest in her, making Tori blush and touched that he cares for her.
BiographyEdit
PastEdit
Currently, not much is known about Tori's past other than she has been going to the same school as Yuma and Bronk since she was young. She also values them as her best friends and defends them at any cost, even to the extent that she now harbours romantic feelings for Yuma.Bronk Stone

DesignEdit
Bronk's design is quite unique as he is drawn in a completely different way to the other characters within ZEXAL. He's usually seen wearing a cap backwards with his hair sticking out of the front and sides. When in his school attire, he sports a red and white shirt, with a red tie and blue pants strapped with black suspenders which feature round, metal orbs. When in his casual attire, he wears an orange t-shirt with a smiley face on which reveals the bottom of his stomach, much like his school attire does.PersonalityEdit
Bronk is quite a competitive and adamant person who takes pleasure in other people's embarrassment, even if it is his own friends; much like the times when he makes Yuma get worked up and challenge events which he can't win, which ends up in Bronk and the other classmates laughing. He is also a strong-willed person who doesn't like to show his emotions, like when he obtained the broken piece of Yuma's pendant and said he just "came across it" when Shark had clearly kicked it into a small forest near their school. Despite this, he seems to have friendly rivalry with Yuma, as he tends to be on Yuma's side and though doesn't always believe that he'll be able to turn around his duels, he supports Yuma most of the time.Bronk seems to have an incredibly strong will. When Yuma was possessed by Number 96: Black Mist, he used Yuma's Number 39: Utopia to save him and was quickly able to shake off the corrupting effect that strikes most Numbers users.
BiographyEdit
Bronk is one of Yuma's classmates who was first seen when he and Yuma were racing to school, when they proceeded to run down a flight of stairs, he kicked an Obot which caused it to spin into Yuma's path causing him to hit and drop his belongings, including his Deck which caused the cleanbots to go rampant in order to pick up what the perceived as litter. He was then later seen when Yuma and Tori were walking around the duel field. Tori spotted Bronk Dueling which caused both of them to run to see the Duel just in time for Bronk to lose to Shark when he attacked directly with "Submersible Carrier Aero Shark". Bronk's Deck was then taken by Shark who stated that Bronk bet it, although it turns out that Shark and his goons kept on saying that Tetsuo was weak for not agreeing with it at first which caused his arrogance to get the better of him. He then held Yuma back from hitting Shark when he broke his pendant. After the events of his Duel, he observed Yuma's personality change which went from happy and exciting to sad as he felt lost without his pendant which caused him to go and find it. After giving Yuma his pendant back, he managed to get Yuma revved up enough to have confidence in himself in his Duel against Shark the next day.
He then attended Yuma and Shark's Duel, rooting for Yuma to win and was surprised at the amateur mistakes that Yuma made throughout such as declaring the type of his Set card. He was also surprised when Shark Summoned "Number 17: Leviathan Dragon" and also when Yuma Summoned "Number 39: Utopia" and said a Duelist spirit was next to him. When he and Tori were starting to think Yuma was having symptoms of being crazy thinking that someone was there they spent the day keeping Yuma away from Tokunosuke thinking he was up to something because of how they knew him from elementary school.
The next day when everyone in class showed Yuma, pictures of himself doing bad things like ruining flowers and scaring a student named Taichi with a frog, they all decided to ignore him even when Bronk and Tori said he wouldn't do things like that. When he and Tori found the photos of Yuma were fakes, they went looking for Taichi to prove Yuma was innocent only to find him in the school gym saying that Tokunosuke told him to set up hundreds of dominoes in exchange for an Xyz monster card. When he and Tori find Yuma dueling Tokunosuke, they are shocked to see that he has both of Yuma's Number cards.
He accompanied Tori and Yuma when they went to the movie set to see D.D Esper Star Robin and snuck in with Tokunoske's help only to get thrown out when they were caught. He came later during Yuma and Fuya's duel with Tori, who brought Fuya's mother.
After Yuma's loss with Shark, Bronk turned his back on Yuma for breaking his promise not to use Numbers, which included not wanting to see Yuma and Shark duel against Rikuo and Kaio, though Kotori talked him into watching.
He was present at Yuma's Duel with Shark and their Duel against Rikuo and Kaio and forgave Yuma for lying.
In episode 13, he informed Yuma, Tori and Takashi of a new duel plaza that opened up in a neighboring town.
In episode 15, Bronk and Tori informed Yuma of the upcoming World Duel Carnival and accompanied Yuma and Tori on his errand to deliver food to Rokujuro at the Duel Lodge. Bronk, later joined by Kari and Haru was present at Yuma's duel against Yamikawa, who was under the possession of Number 12: Armored Ninja - Crimson Shadow. When Rokujuro handed Yuma the Duel Lodge's Secret Deck, Bronk exclaimed that Yuma should beef his first deck with the Secret Deck to use for the WDC.
In episode 17, Bronk, Takashi and Tori was discussing to Yuma of different people who were mysteriously hospitalized who also happened to carry different Numbers. When Yuma refused to talk, Bronk, Takashi, Tori, Tokunosuke and Cathy formed the Numbers Club, a group made to solve the Numbers mystery without the help of Yuma. The only leads the Numbers Club got was Cathy talking about Yuma talking to Astral about Numbers and Kaito Tenjo. The search was useless, until Tokunosuke found the devious fortune-teller Jin, who they thought would lead them to what Number cards are. Jin kidnapped the Club, except for Cathy, enticing Yuma to duel Jin. Bronk and the Club witness in horror as Jin used the powers of Number 11: Big Eye and Number 16: Ruler of Color - Shock Ruler to put Yuma in a pinch. When Yuma and Astral were feeling hope, Tetsuo and the Numbers Club watched as they saw Astral for the first time and witnessed the summoning of Chaos Number 39: Utopia Ray. After Yuma defeated Jin, the Numbers Club went to thank Astral for saving them instead of Yuma.
When Yuma recovered Number 96: Black Mist, Bronk complained that Yuma was just attacking recklessly without listening and they got into a fight and didn't talk for a couple of days. When they ran into each other Bronk accidentally knocked the Emperor's Key, causing Astral to lose control over Number 96, who took control of Astral and turned Yuma into his puppet. Yuma gave Bronk his Number 39: Utopia so that he can duel the Wicked Number to rescue him and Astral.

DesignEdit
Kaito has light grey eyes, pale skin and blonde hair that is curled up in a point with a dark green spiked front. His attire includes a black trench coat with a high collar over a grey shirt and white pants with black boots. He also has a belt with two purple boxes for his deck and likely his Number cards. He wears a fingerless black glove on his right hand. Unlike any other regular D-Pad version of a Duel Disk, Kaito's disk is a blue and single-bladed disk that curves outside. He can duel without a Duel Gazer; however, his left eye turns red and several marks resembling a Duel Gazer are seen when he Duels. When Kaito duels, his black outfit switches to white in a process called "Photon Change", which he resembles Jack Atlas. This is possibly the reason why Kaito isn't affected by Numbers' effect that usually increases the amplitude of the users' desires. Also, for some reason when he uses a "Photon" card, his body lights up.PersonalityEdit
Kaito shares a similar personality to that of Seto Kaiba when it comes to protecting his younger brother from any danger. Because of Haruto's condition supposedly being caused by the "Number" cards, Kaito Duels and acts ruthlessly when it comes to facing those whose possess such cards. He announces his arrival by whistling which tends to frighten the person he is about to Duel.[2]Kaito is opposed to inflicting fear on his opponent, calling it an unnecessary and despicable thing to do. This is shown when he scolds Orbital 7 for telling him extract every drop of Yuma's soul. He is however not above using the fear his opponents already have to make them doubt themselves as seen with Astral when he could have summoned Number 39: Utopia against Kaito but the fear of Galaxy-Eyes prevented him to think clearly. He considers his hunting to be a job he has to do, not one he wants to do.[3]
Before Kaito Duels, he would always say his usual phrase, "Allow me to collect your "Numbers" along with your souls", and when he takes the "Number", he says "Numbers hunting complete".
Kaito doesn't trust Dr. Faker or Mr. Heartland. Whenever he talks with Mr. Heartland, he clearly is shown to be silently glaring at him, but that's probably because Mr. Heartland is the one who tells Haruto to use his powers not caring about what happens to Haruto. He also accuses Dr. Faker of hiding him the truth about the "Numbers", and only hunts them in order to heal Haruto. He also didn't tell them about his plan to find the "Numbers'" origin by himself or about Yuma and Astral, and lied to when Mr. Heartland asked about that day.
Kaito is similar to Dartz in the fact that he steals the souls of most of his opponents, similar to the way the The Seal of Orichalcos worked, the notable exception was that he steals souls from specific opponents without the use of a card.
BiographyEdit
AnimeEdit
Kaito's brother, Haruto was acting very strange. Mr. Heartland informed Kaito that he could only be cured if they obtained the one hundred "Numbers" cards. Dr. Faker himself claimed that they must do so to save all dimensions. Kaito was given a robot called Orbital 7 to help him hunt for the cards. Using Mr. Heartland's penthouse as a base, they find and defeat the holders of the "Numbers". Thus far, he has obtained eleven "Numbers" using his Photon Hand ability, stealing the souls of the original owners and leaving them catatonic in the process. He wields the "Numbers" himself to aide him in collecting more of them. Kaito was feeling guilty about stealing the souls of the holders, but Mr. Heartland informed him that they had no choice, as all "Number" holders are evil, when in reality they are just victims of their card's influence.[2]Shortly after, he targeted Yuma next. During the Duel he easily outmatched Yuma with his 2 Numbers and his true ace monster, "Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon". When he saw Yuma using 2 Numbers, he claimed he is also a Numbers Hunter and looked quite pleased to have a rival. Just before he would have won the Duel, Orbital 7 showed him a hologram that Haruto had collapsed. Therefore he stopped the Duel and went to help his brother. Before he left he revealed his name and told Yuma to remember it, meaning that he will come after Yuma again soon.[3]
It is shown that he has put at least four people in hospital in a catatonic state from their soul being taken with their Numbers. But these four people are already ones he took Numbers from as he still has 8 unseen Numbers.[4]
Later, when Jin confronted Yuma on claiming to be Kaito's servant and that Kaito was watching.[4] This however, wasn't the real Kaito. It was revealed that the Kaito that was watching the Duels was only a statue as Cathy broke it. After Jin lost to Yuma he was shown to have another Number, but the real Kaito appeared, and Jin begged him to be his servant, proving that he was also lying about that. Kaito instead defeated him and took his third "Number", along with his soul, bringing the total of collected Numbers to twelve.[5]
Kaito complained that Haruto shouldn't continue using his powers, as he could collapse again, but Haruto said he wants to continue using it as he was doing something good for the world. Mr. Heartland suggested Kaito to hurry up and finish hunting the "Numbers" so that Haruto can be healed. Kaito suspects that Dr. Faker is not telling the truth about the "Numbers", so he ordered Orbital 7 to find the origin of the Numbers. Orbital found that Yuma's pendant could be it.
Ryoga Kamishiro tried to protect the Key, and as a result, he and Kaito dueled. During the duel, he allowed Ryoga to take his "Number 30: Acid Golem of Destruction" in order to inflict damage to Ryoga. He defeated Ryoga due to the fact that the latter took "Number 30: Acid Golem of Destruction". When he took Ryoga's soul and tried compressing a Number card out of it, he noticed that the soul didn't contain a Number card and absorbed it. He was unable to confront Yuma because Orbital 7 notified that Photon Change had already used 85% of its power and, therefore, there wasn't much left. He then took Yuma's pendant and flew off.[6]
While analyzing the Emperor's Key, Orbital 7 said that nothing from this world would react to it, so Kaito suggested to use the Barrier Light which comes from another world, which worked. When Kaito entered the dimension inside the Emperor's Key, he confronted Astral and mentioned the Balian World. Kaito then proceeded to duel Astral with a grand total of 22 "Numbers" (10 from Astral and 12 Kaito) on the line. Kaito quickly overpowered Astral and threatened him with Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon. When Astral was ready to give up, Yuma appeared with the ZEXAL Power, which he uses to combine himself and Astral, shocking Kaito. Yuma and Astral were able to use this new power to defeat Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon, so Kaito was forced to use a last resort trap to end the duel in a Draw. Yuma asked Kaito why he hunts "Numbers". Kaito answered that he sold his soul to the devil for Haruto's sake. Then, he returned Ryoga's soul and escaped once again.
It is later revealed that he will take part in the World Duel carnival as a Numbers Hunter. Before the World Duel Carnival started, Mr. Heartland summoned Kaito to watch all the people coming to the tournament. During that time, Kaito helped Yuma Tsukumo enter the tournament with the intention of settling his duel against Astral.
In episode 31, Kaito is shown to have defeated two number holders at once.

DesignEdit
Ryoga has dark blue eyes, pale skin and dark purple hair, similar to tentacles hanging down, befits his Deck theme of aquatic creatures, as his hair is similar in appearance to an octopus. His other accessories include a grey, shark tooth-shaped pendant, and two grey rings on his right hand. He also owns a grey and green Duel Gazer with a red lens and a yellow spike. In the manga, he also wears a large red jeweled, yellow pendant that vaguely resembles a spaceship. His attire includes a dark purple jacket over a black shirt and dark pants. When in his school attire, he wears a white shirt with green-lined sleeves, tie and a collar. During his National Circuit days, Ryoga wore a white top with a purple waist coat and his usual dark pants.
PersonalityEdit
Ryoga flaunts his power by taking the Decks of the people he defeats, making them squirm in the process, such as when he defeated Bronk Stone. When he became possessed by the Numbers, he became quite violent, destroying the scenery surrounding him throughout the Duel. After being disqualified from the National championships for trying to look at the other competitors' decks, he became bitter and uncaring, the way he held himself at the beginning of the series. However, he does have some honor; as he returned Bronk's deck upon losing to Yuma as he promised and keeping all the decks he'd stolen from people completely intact. His defeat to Yuma seems to have humbled him in a way - he is no longer overly cruel to people, as shown when he returns Yuma's pendant after winning an Ante Duel with it at stake. He also seems to put more faith in bonds and friendship, shown by his willingness to form a team with Yuma during the Tag Duel with Rikuo and Kaio. He further entrusts Yuma with a card that would allow them to win the Duel.
Shark also tries to rescue Emperor's Key from Kaito and Orbital 7 when it is stolen, clearly stating that he sees Yuma as his friend. In the Duel with Kaito, Shark remembers Yuma, and that Yuma would never give up. Before Shark's loss to Yuma, he hated people who never gave up.
Anime biographyEdit
National Circuit DaysEdit
In the past, Ryoga was a well-known and popular Duelist within the National Duel Circuit. The pressure got to Ryoga's head, causing him to become desperate because he wanted to support his female friend, who was in an accident being heavily injured. While preparing for the finals and in the waiting room, he notices that his his opponent dropped and left his deck. While not intentional, Ryoga's desperation got the better of him and ultimately looked at the visible cards on the floor. Midway through his duel, while neither duelist had a visible advantage, Ryoga was disqualified canceling the match, as he was found out to have looked at his opponent's cards. This also caused him to be permanently banned from the Duel Circuit. After this ban, Shark turned into a delinquent and began to steal the decks of his opponents once he beat them. It is known by most students within Heartland Highschool that Ryoga was not only a skilled duelist, but also a bully. He obtained the nickname Shark, due to the fact that he used an ocean-themed deck and because he ripped his opponents' decks out of their hands swiftly and with malice. Despite Ryoga's actions, Yuma defended Ryoga, as he believes that everyone has done something in their past which they regret. Yuma recalls how he used "Numbers" even when he promised he wouldn't, because he was afraid he would lose.
It is later revealed that IV set up by carefully placing his Deck on the edge of a pot so it would tip over. Once the Deck fell, it drew Ryoga's attention, and he was prompted to look at the cards. IV also revealed that Ryoga won't be able to fulfill his promise to a certain woman. Little is known about the woman that Ryoga made the promise to, although she is seen lying in a bed, heavily bandaged.
